Myriad Art -
Trisha McLean - Artist & Writer - Ladner, BC
Patricia Anne McLean – I was born and raised in the Kootenays, in Trail, British Columbia.
I graduated from school and relocated to Vancouver; where I trained and worked as a hairdresser. After saving enough money for a one-way ticket to Europe, I was off on an adventure that lasted almost ten years. I was determined to live and breathe “ART.”
I settled in The Hague, Holland, and experienced many types of art and artists during my life there.
As an artisan there, I worked mainly with leather – designing and producing 100% handmade articles.
I burnt my designs in the leather and hand coloured them – from shoes to hats, belts, purses, vests and custom pieces. I had a boutique for 2 ˝ years, traveled the “yearly art markets” throughout Holland for 3, and sat on the Art & Antique Market for 10 (during the summer).
While in Holland I did a live drawing study at the Royal Academy and did numerous courses such as batiking and Swiss Tole Painting through museums. I taught leather and beadwork privately.
I personally regard the accessibility of the museums and being able to view the “Real Masters” close- up as my greatest inspiration to create.
Upon returning to Canada I designed stained glass work. I also designed and made leather flowers & beadwork, but started focusing on painting, using acrylics.
Over the years I have painted everything with acrylics. I love costume design and make costumes with painted fabrics and headdresses (with lights). I also make lanterns from floral wire and papier mache (also painted). My paintings combine personal experience and interests with a mix of realism and fantasy. Both mythical and cultural influences are part of my artistic expression.
In my acrylic/canvas paintings, I like to make my name part of the painting, rather than a signature. I also include something I have, which has value to me - into each painting. My paintings have sometimes 60 – 80 layers of washes to achieve the rich colours.
Currently I am writing and illustrating – producing cards and prints, while putting a few books together for the future. My main goal is to do it with purpose. My Chakra Dragon Series of 11 cards – which includes the Magician, 8 coloured dragons, and male & female energy dragons- are based on colour therapy. These cards & prints introduce the use and understanding of the power of each individual colour. This series was painted with layers of washes using gouache paint.
The Meditation Chakra Collages – a series of eight colours is also meant for colour therapy.
Life is not all black & white – there is so much colour in between to enjoy!
